On our local PBS channel in the early 1980's, there was 'Good Neighbors' (The Good Life in the UK), a simple, timely BBC sitcom about a husband who quits his job in product development to become self-sustaining in his suburban backyard. His wife is a sometimes reluctant partner in this life change. Next door are the stereotypical neighbor couple who complain about the mess, noise and foolishness of the enterprise only to aid their friends in meeting their gardening goals by the end of every episode. I recently converted the husband to watching this series on DVD. I remember thinking the whole self-sufficiency idea was pretty interesting as the couple have to problem-solve how they will keep the whole thing going. The episode with the methane gas generator in the basement sounded interesting but smelly. That was during the last energy crisis. Wish we had figured out alternative energy all those years ago.
