It is said that one can have a good garden in five years, a great one in seven and an excellent one in twelve. Abundance is a concept that will emerge over time and needs patience. I was reminded of scenes from the Vampire chronicles when thinking about this concept. Anne Rice describes the senses of vampires as being heightened. The colors, smells, sounds and sensations in the stories are described in detail. So also would I like my garden to be lush, overflowing with color, foliage, texture. I recently heard a BBC commentator use the phrase 'incontinent with color' to describe the ideal mixed border. Usually I imagine plantings being so thickly planted that effort is needed to find the few weeds that can find a way into this jungle. One bed is currently like this in my garden after almost three years. When plants need to be split and moved around, I've achieved this goal of abundance. Being able to cut flowers to bring inside and still have a show outside is the payoff of abundance. (Photo of entrance nook to Metropolitan Museum of Art NYC)
