Garden Principles - School of Rock

A few years ago I read the P. Allen Smith book, My Garden Home, and kept coming back to the twelve principles of good design that he outlines with examples of how these are used at his house. I check this list every season when I re-evaluate how things are looking out there. "Whimsy!", I often blurt out to the husband as we are walking around and see some goofy ornament in a yard. "Enclosure!", I comment as we drive past nicely outlined properties. The 12 principles are: Enclosure, Shape and Form, Abundance, Entry, Rhythm Texture Pattern, Color, Focal Point, Framing the View, Structures, Whimsy, Mystery, Time.
The next set of posts are my thoughts about how I've tried to use each of the twelve principals. Other posts have reminded me of movie titles. These principles remind me of books and how something in a plot, character or theme relates to the concept. Made sense to me; hope it does to you.
