I picked the novel Griffin and Sabine to illustrate this point but any epistolary novel gives the same idea of structure. This novel is so visual and unlike others that it is always the best example of the genre to me. Within the structure of letters, one tells the details of the story. My husband and I attended a lecture on creative writing last year and our assignment to push us into thinking was to write the message attached to a postcard we were given. This exercise made one provide a point of view which gave enough details to start to entice the reader without giving away the whole story at once. In gardening principles, structure refers to forms, enclosure, framing the view and several other principles already mentioned but takes this into a combination of several of these. The hardscaping of the garden really can give the outlines that are then colored in by the plantings. And hardscape in winter is really a great thing.
