Ah, poetry. This category of principle reminded me first of a novel with music but of course, poetry is the words without the notes behind them. This poem by Coleridge is one that sticks in my mind because of the rhythm of the lines. It also has the very descriptive passages of the 'pleasure dome', a definite look any gardener could aspire to. When I started in my little urban garden, I did not quite understand these ideas of pattern and rhythm. With a tiny space, I put in one kind of each plant to start. A very busy, confused look is what I started to see. After reading in many places to 'arrange plants in groups of three or more' I started to appreciate the way several of the same plants could move the eye across the space. Now, with a larger suburban yard, I've really become fond of boxwoods that I've scattered in almost every bed because they add lush backdrop and give some green color all through the year.
