Rambo - Guerrilla Gardening

As I'm listening to my podcasts on the daily commute, I heard one on guerrilla gardening lately that also related to a different podcast on squatter's rights. This form of gardening is to spread plants or seeds (even 'seed bombs') on a piece of land that seems to be neglected and public. In England and Germany, these gardeners start work on public green spaces and then later get the village council to approve their efforts when it starts to look good. Sort of like squatting on land which in most of our States can become yours if you improve it for a designated period of time and then pay the property taxes. Gardening at night is suggested to avoid arrests. It made me think about whether I would attempt something similar around here. I suppose I did when I pulled out all the Canadian thistle from the yard of the apartment building next to my condo garden in the past. Even stuck some daylilies in a muddy hole that was left. But I suppose in general, our society tends to sue a bit more than the Europeans. So I'll probably just keep pulling out random weeds when I pass them in public. Drives the husband crazy but I can't help myself.

I think I know where you got that urge to spread plants. Some people have gone so far as to visit public parks with packets of leftover seeds that will either grow or be eaten by the wildlife. Either way it beats being thrown in the trash.

Ha! One of my New Year's Resolutions is to "plant flowers around my city *stealthily*." I found www.guerrillagardening.org last week after I sowed my sunflowers in peat pots. I'm Guerrilla Gardening in DC at the end of April... Hopefully the cops will be too busy with real crime and ignore me and some of my friends as we plant!
